Skeleton Gorge to the Cableway

Comments Off on Skeleton Gorge to the Cableway

This hike begins on the Eastern side of Table Mountain in the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. We offer a 45 minute walk showing you the highlights of the Garden to start. Then, you’ll ascend Skeleton Gorge through rare, afromontane forest which offers some welcome shade from the African sun. This hike has 6 short ladders and a short section of boulders on route to scramble over (this is the fun part!). Eventually the path opens up offering expansive views of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs and False Bay in the distance. At the top one finds the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir which was completed in 1904 and was built to provide the City of Cape Town with fresh water. From this point it is a steady climb onto the ‘back table’ to Maclear’s Beacon which is the highest point on Table Mountain at 1085 meters. The last hour is a relatively flat walk offering iconic views of the front side of Table Mountain and the City of Cape Town below. The descent via the Cableway weather permitting.

One reason to choose this hike: If you want to include Kirstenbosch and Table Mountain in one trip.

Time: +/-6 hours

Includes: Pick up and drop off from your accommodation in Cape Town’s City Centre and Atlantic Seaboard areas.

Excludes: Entrance into Kirstenbosch Gardens (R80 per person), Cableway fee (R200 per person), or Taxi from Cableway to the start of the hike as this hike starts and ends on different sides of the mountain (+/-R200 for a group of up to 4).

Cost: R1300 per person (+R700 for the group to have a privately guided hike or +R700 single supplement if applicable). Rates valid until August 31, 2020.

Let us know if you’d like to purchase a lunchbox from us for R150 per person. Included: a sandwich or wrap, seasonal fruit, snacks and 2 liters of water to keep your energy up along the way. Or purchase a snack pack for R110 per person which is all of the above minus the sandwich. We are happy to accommodate any dietary requirements you may have, just let us know when you book. Feel free to bring your own food and water if you prefer for the trail. Here is another option to keep in mind…there is a cafeteria style restaurant at the top of Table Mountain (only open when the Cablecar is functioning so it’s not to be relied on 100% for your food intake in any event). This offers basic hot and cold food options in a touristy area. Please note: if you wish to dine at the restaurant our tour will end here and you can make your own way home after spending time at the top & the restaurant. There are taxis readily available at the base of Table Mountain, or you can order an Uber using the free Wifi at the top of Table Mountain in the Wifi Lounge. Uber usually arrives within 5 minutes.
