Lauren’s love of the outdoors is one of the things that inspired her to start Mother City Hikers. Her other inspiration was more practical. She knows how risky it is to go hiking without carrying enough water, food, extra clothes, sunscreen, and a map. So, while getting to know the Table Mountain area, she was surprised at the number of people she encountered who were either lost or wholly unprepared for a day in that urban wilderness. A generous soul at heart, Lauren couldn’t help but offer the often lost, and/or thirsty, sunburned, or hungry day hikers whatever she could – water, food, and sunscreen, as well as advice/directions, and sometimes even some of the information she’d learned about the Table Mountain area. In addition to relief, her actions were always met with profound gratitude.
Which, got her to thinking…
Could she combine her love of the outdoors, with the fulfillment she felt in sharing her knowledge and expertise about hiking and nature with others? In 2009, Lauren founded Mother City Hikers and still guides when she can as she loves getting to know her clients while sharing a connective experience in nature.

Table Mountain is one of South Africa’s most iconic landmarks, and at the top of everyone’s “must-see” list on any visit to the Mother City – one of several local nicknames for Cape Town. While many visitors enjoy riding the cable car to the top – and we do, too, sometimes – we think the best way to experience both the mountain and the National Park that surrounds it, is by walking one of its trails. Some people feel like they can handle the terrain without a guide. In our experience, however, because of the complexity of the trail system, and the number of lost, thirsty, hungry, tired, and/or sunburned hikers we’ve encountered over the years – including locals – we always recommend going with a guide. Whether that’s Lauren, Mother City Hikers’ founder, or one of our very experienced guides, we want your experience on the mountain to be safe, memorable, and fun.
Table Mountain has something for everyone, with trails suitable for beginners, advanced hikers, and everyone in between. We love introducing visitors to this local treasure by sharing their knowledge about what makes this area so special. And just how special is it? Special enough for UNESCO to grant the area World Heritage Site status in 2004 – some plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world.
